One Last Bulb

This year I put an amaryllis bulb in the middle of my paperwhite bulb arrangement. All the paperwhite bulbs bloomed first. I cut off the tops of the paperwhites and left the leaves in the bowl as a backdrop to the amaryllis bulb. It turned out really pretty.

Weekends

As the song goes….”Everybody’s Working for the Weekend”…. When the weekend comes, we are overwhelmed with all the projects and things we have to get done in two short days. This morning as I was making my list, I reflected back on the last month of Christmas holiday festivities and realized there had not been even enough time to enjoy the miracle of our beautiful amaryllis bulbs. So I took this moment to look back at my pictures and record a blog post for everyone to enjoy.

In past years, I forced the “Red Lion” amaryllis, but this year I tried some different varieties. My favorite had to be “Red Pearl”.

Happy Holidays – December Roses

Our Christmas tree is up, decorations are hung and shopping will soon begin for the holiday season, however, the weather in Big D is not Christmas-like. As a matter of fact, we are still enjoying some of the most beautiful rose blooms yet this season, as temperatures have not been below freezing for long enough. So Happy Holidays and…….

Each time I watch a bulb bloom …..I am so amazed.

This amaryllis bulb bloomed late this year but gave us such a nice burst of color in our front hallway when everything else outside was dormant.

Sweet Winter Paperwhites Ring in a Happy New Year !!

Every year I force paper whites during the Thanksgiving weekend so I have a bouquet of fragrant winter beauties blooming in time for the Christmas holiday.

The bud is exquisite and a true miracle in itself. It is simply amazing to me how any bulb can produce a flower.

These smiling paper whites are a member of the narcissus family, which includes daffodils and jonquils, the first flowers we will see in the spring. For instructions on planting this arrangement see my post from last year below. Happy New Year to everyone !!

Snow in the Garden

We were all surprised in Big D when it snowed on Christmas Eve!!!

What a treat for us ol’ Chicagoans………

And, the garden never looked more beautiful with its lovely blanket of white snow.

Delightful and Surprising Ornamental Kale

You would never know that this plant that looks like a cabbage head all winter long will surprise you in the early spring with a tall lovely yellow flower coming out from the center. I put one on each side of my roses and throughout my garden for winter color and then look forward to seeing these beautiful blooms in April. Amazing multi-purpose beauty for two seasons !! Enjoy.

Sweet Paperwhites in Full Bloom

This year I grew the most incredible paperwhites but the best part was sharing them with my sister-in-law Debbie who was visiting from Scottsdale. She enjoyed taking pictures of the different stages the flowers were in as much as I did. I got them planted late this year so they did not go into a full bloom until after they went back home but here are some of the pictures we took. Miss you Deb !! Enjoy the flowers and hope they will remind you of your Christmas here with us this year. We loved having you.
