Today after the rain stopped the sun came out and Paul and I visited the arbor to find a beautiful array of wisteria intertwined with climbing pinkie rose. Paul was very worried about our wisteria this year because all the other wisteria bushes in town were in full bloom a month ago. I guess our wisteria was just waiting for the Climbing Pinkie Rose to start blooming so we could have an incredible combination of spring blooms in P & B Garden. What a miracle.

Yesterday I happened to be off work and gardening out in front when a young man approached me. He asked if I would like to buy some flowers to help him pay for college. I said, of course, and he brought me down to meet his Mom, Arlissa. They were driving a truck and on the side the sign said “College Fund Flowers”. The truck was filled with trays and trays of begonias, petunias and zinnias. Arlissa explained to me that this fall she will have four children in college, but found out a week ago that her newest college student wanted to go to Oklahoma, which meant out of state tuition. Panic struck this Mom, as does most Mom’s when our children aspire to do something that does not fit our budget. We search for any way that we can to help them, which is what Arlissa did. In the last week, she had the vision for a flower business, used the Internet to find resources and get set up, acquired a tax id number, and hired students to help her.

“College Fund Flowers” is certainly going to be a success, with such an innovative, quick thinker like Arlissa. Good luck !! Don’t forget to invite us to the graduation party in four years !!

If you live in Bedford, Texas or close proximity contact CollegeFundFlowers@yahoo.com for more information.

Today I started two new flower beds outside of the new arbor. We planted chinese wisteria on one side which blooms in the spring and evergreen wisteria on the other side that blooms in the summer. We also planted Don Juan and Climbing Pinkie Roses.

The Climbing Pinkie Rose Bush does not have thorns so it is perfect for arbors. I dug out two new beds on each side and planted my first Yellow Knock Out Rose…a new release for this year. I am anxious to see the beautiful blooms it will make.

I love Paul’s design of the arbor. The garden gate makes it very interesting from the street as passer-bys will wonder what is behind it. When I was growing up I used to walk by a Japanese Garden in our neighborhood. You could only see in through the cracks of the fence but I was so intrigued. I never did get to see it but I am sure it was beautiful.

There are so many flowers left to plant and so little dirt. I am going to have to go “up” arbors and walls to make room. Thank you Paul for building this arbor for me.

We had a wonderful weekend at PB Garden. Saturday I did some Italian cooking with a new recipe by Giada and also baked apple crisp with the apples I brought back from Maine. Jennifer spent the weekend with us and we just love when she is here.

I had not been in the garden in two weeks and I spent most of Sunday pruning and designing some new pots while Paul cleaned the garage and Jennifer went to an art gallery in Fort Worth. Everything is still in bloom and the arbors look lovely. There is so much I want to do and learn about growing roses and perennials but I just run out of time. So today I was thinking back on the lyrics from Jim Croce’s song which had no meaning at the time, but now I can fully related to the message he was sending back in 1972.

If I could put Time in a Bottle…. The first thing that I’d like to do is to spend everyday like a treasure……… “But there never seems to be enough time………To do the things you want to do………Once you find them”

I would love to bottle up all these weekends and spend them over and over again, with Paul, Jennifer, Brian, Rachael, John Paul, our parents, our family and our friends and that is what I plan to do for a long time to come. One thing I have learned lately is each day is a gift and we must treasure every moment . So today join us in PB Garden for some beautiful Knock Out Roses as well as the “unknown $5 rose” from end of the season sale table last year, with an exquisite smell. By the way Paul and I were looking for lizards and found that our door looked great from the other side of the fence too. Come on in !!!

A few years ago, Darrell and Marty were “moving on up to the East Side” and they were going to tear down the porch shade structure in the yard of their old Bedford house before they moved. They asked Paul if he wanted the huge beams that were part of this structure. When he said yes I thought … what for?? I just could not imagine where he would use this wood… but Paul surprised me. First he used them on the small fence in front of the pool equipment. The posts were used to hold the large cement pots at the top and we planted some moss rose type plants that cascaded over the sides. The second project were the posts in front of the door at Lizzie Lane . I am always amazed at Paul’s talents and the ideas he has.

Thank you Darrell and Marty for the wood posts. They are now a permanent part of PB Garden.
