Conservatory In the Making

Ever since we moved into our house, Paul has envisioned a conservatory off the back porch area. This year, we came closer to that vision when Paul invented a temporary room to store our plants this winter instead of the garage. Now, I just love to go out to see my plants in bloom after work. The area stays very warm and everything is just thriving. I can’t wait to get the full conservatory built someday. Thank you Paul !!

Our Best Garden Ever

This year has to be our best garden yet !! Sometimes, I cannot wait to come home from work so I can walk through the yard and enjoy all the blooms. My favorite addition this year was the elephant ears. What a majestic addition to our front shade garden. Each leaf is a work of art and so big it is hard to imagine they came from a bulb. The other evening we also enjoyed a beautiful rainbow. For a minute we imagined we were in Hawaii, but the mosquitoes soon ate us alive and quickly brought us back to the reality of Bedford, TX…. but there is no place like home for me and Paul

Although the yard held up well during the 100 degree heat, you can definitely see a difference now that the temperature has dropped below three digits and we got some much needed rain. What a lovely time of year.

Lord Baltimore

This has been a very hot summer. Tomorrow it will be September 1st and it is still in the 90’s. Our Lord Baltimore Hibiscus was beautiful this year. It bloomed over and over again with huge blooms of red color making our yard a tropical paradise. It was fun to float around in the pool, the few times that we stopped to do so, and watch the large blooms look down at us.

So beautiful.

Bird of Paradise

Last year we planted our bird of paradise by the mailbox. We hoped that it would survive our coldest winter ever and it has certainly surprised us with a flurry of repeat blooms this summer. It is hard to believe that such a delicate leaf and beautiful tropical flower can withstand freezing temperatures but we are sure glad that it did. A couple of people have stopped by to ask about this tropical beauty so we hope to see more popping up in the neighborhood.

Arctic Blast Hits Big D

We are fortunate to live in a city where there are over 230 sunny days a year and an average temperature of 43 degrees in January. No wonder everyone was freaking out this week when we dipped down to 17.

For us, the biggest concern was our Sago Palms. Although more mature plants at this stage in our garden, the Sago is tender and like most of us does not like cold weather. The Sagos have grown too large over the years to wheel them into the garage any longer, so Paul covered them with frost cloths. We are hoping that they weather the frigid blast and look forward to sunny days ahead for this week with highs in the 50’s. Snow on Christmas and now an arctic freeze …. we hope Old Man Winter is behind us in Big D. Brrrrr !!

Flowers and Friendships Continue to Bloom Year after Year !

This rose produces a beautiful array of blooms every year and never fails me, just like my friendship with my two special friends Carey and Wendy. This weekend we had a wonderful time on a girls trip to McKinney, TX, great shops, great food, lots of laughter and wonderful memories. When I got back home I found this lovely rose blooming in my back yard.

I am so thankful for Flowers and Friendships that continue to Bloom Year after Year !!
