Red Lion Amaryllis

On Saturday, I was planting pansies in just a sweater outside and today its snowing, but I am not complaining. Its January 8th and this is the first bad weather we have had here in Big D.

Yesterday I posted about my favorite amaryllis for 2010 the “Red Pearl”, but today the “Red Lion” was in full bloom. Equally as beautiful.

Weekends

As the song goes….”Everybody’s Working for the Weekend”…. When the weekend comes, we are overwhelmed with all the projects and things we have to get done in two short days. This morning as I was making my list, I reflected back on the last month of Christmas holiday festivities and realized there had not been even enough time to enjoy the miracle of our beautiful amaryllis bulbs. So I took this moment to look back at my pictures and record a blog post for everyone to enjoy.

In past years, I forced the “Red Lion” amaryllis, but this year I tried some different varieties. My favorite had to be “Red Pearl”.

Each time I watch a bulb bloom …..I am so amazed.

This amaryllis bulb bloomed late this year but gave us such a nice burst of color in our front hallway when everything else outside was dormant.

Peonies and Ants

The first year that my peony (peeny if you are from the Midwest) came up I was very shocked to see all these ants all over the blooms. I asked my Mom what I could do about it and she told me to leave the ants alone because they help to open up the blooms. I was truly amazed at this but thought before I post about it I better do some research. Unfortunately I found that this is an old wives tale and the ants do not actually open the blooms, they just love the sweet secretion from the peony.

I myself, choose to believe what my Mom told me. It is much more magical but most importantly a treasured memory passed down to me from my Mom.

Dahlia’s

This summer my Dad was walking around our yard and asked what kind of flower this was going to be and I told him a Dahlia. He said that his Dad, my Grandpa, used to plant these every year in their yard on Albany Ave. in Chicago over 70 years ago. I did not know this about my Grandpa when I bought the bulbs. I thought the flower on the bulb package was so pretty. Thanks for sharing this story with me Dad. I plan to plant many more Dahlias in my yard in honor of Grandpa Fliegel.
